Phobias are illogical fears that are a lot more extreme than a general perception of fear. Phobias can be attached to any scenario, person (like dentist) or object, and the sufferer experiences a strong psychological reaction each time they are exposed to the phobic trigger.
In their minds people with a phobia will perceive the object of their phobia as posing inappropriate amounts of danger and respond accordingly. People that do not suffer with the same phobia are likely to think that the fear is silly mainly because they tend not to perceive the object as posing the same amount of danger.
