Typically people believe that nail biting is truly an unattractive and uncomfortable habit. Lots of people bite their nails in their school years then stop during the later years of growing up. An unfortunate few maintain this habit into adulthood causing actual injury to their fingers: using it as a crutch to manage anxiety attacks or other underlying problems. Hypnotherapy techniques are typically used to help people recover from this destructive behavioural pattern.

So what exactly is a problem behaviour?

A habit is defined as being a pattern of behaviour which is chronic and customarily subconscious. It’s something we gain by regularly repeating a certain behaviour. The very nature of a habit is that it is effortless to get into but very hard to escape. What makes a habit a bad one is whenever it’s mentally or psychologically detrimental to us for some reason.

Due to the way it has been portrayed over the years, many people wonder if hypnotherapy treatments actually work. But recent research has shown that a hypnotic approach brings about noticeable changes in the brain and so we now have data which confirms that it does stimulate a different response.

Stanford University has completed research with volunteers who were hypnotised and told they were observing coloured objects. When they were studying the objects, there was an increase in blood flow to the area of the brain that registers colour, even though in reality the objects were monochrome. This shows that hypnosis can modify perceptions. A hypnotherapist can use this system to change unwanted behaviour and bring about constructive changes

Being an adolescent is hard. They often endure feelings of low self-esteem, anxiousness as well as hormonal complications. Some young adults feel a higher amount of anxiousness and stress that can impinge on their day to day life. According to research, ten percent of our children below the age of 16 suffer from mental health difficulties (1). The fact it happens to loads of children doesn’t make it any easier for those that face it.

Some mental health problems can be treated effectively with hypnotherapy and can produce long term results.

Hypnotherapy for anxiety and fear

Millions of people are affected by anxiety every year. Quite a few sufferers live with this problem in silence and attempt to cope without trying to find help. Anxiety is an innate part of us all.

In its normal form, it will help us recognise danger, keep us alert and help with general performance. Anxiety affects us on an emotional level and physically.

Anxiety produces adrenaline that can really feel a lot like panic and fear. This adrenaline is the thing that kept our ancestors one step ahead of their potential predators and is referred to as ‘fight or flight’ response. Mercifully, we don’t face the same dangers as our ancestors’ but this adrenaline still has a purpose today. Although, if we have too much anxiety it can cause us be scared and worry even though there is actually little or nothing to be scared of.

Beliefs and feelings like this can have a severe result on a person’s life and be long lasting. Anxiety like this is as a general rule called GAD (generalised anxiety disorder)
